Question
What is the difference between On-Premise and On-Demand (Agility-Hosted) deployment?
Answer
Agility has a flexible deployment model. You can choose an On-Demand deployment, which is hosted by Agility, or an On-Premise deployment hosted on your own servers.
In general, the On-Demand option is the easiest to get started and generally has a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
The On-Premise option provides the most control over the entire solution, but also involves more internal IT resources to install, secure, and maintain the infrastructure, which can create the higher TCO. The table below outlines the key considerations for determining which deployment option is right for your organization, using the FURPS Model (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FURPS).
Considerations
Consideration | On-Demand | On-Premise |
---|---|---|
Functionality | There is only one functionality difference between the On-Demand and On-Premise model, and it is the Data Mart. In On-Demand, customers can only access the data mart through Agility Analytics. | The customer can install the data mart and integrate it with Agility Analytics or an existing reporting tool. |
Usability | Agility upgrades automatically or you can choose to request upgrades on your own schedule. You can choose between Agility Authentication or Single Sign-on (SSO) via SAML 2.0. |
You download new software from the community site and run the setup with the upgrade option. Depending on the organization, getting the resources to perform this upgrade can be a challenge. On-Premise customers can choose between Agility Authentication, SSO via Windows Integrated Authentication or SSO via HTTP Headers. |
Reliability | Data is located in Agility’s On-Demand environment, which features state-of-the-art hosting from Rackspace. | You allocate servers, perform installation, set up maintenance procedures, and monitor the system, so reliability can vary and is the customer's responsibility. |
Performance | Agility servers are located in the United States. We partner with a third-party for application acceleration, so latency is minimized for users across the globe. | Users rely on the customer’s network infrastructure for access, so performance is dependent on that network performance. |
Supportability | Data is located in Agility’s On-Demand environment. Agility controls all system administration, infrastructure maintenance, and related security aspects. You control Agility application-level security. | Data is located on your infrastructure and you have complete control over both confidentiality and availability of the data. However, you allocate servers, perform installation, set up maintenance procedures, and monitor the system. |
Note
Due to the higher overall TCO and the time needed to stand up an internal VersionOne instance, many organizations choose the On-demand option. However, switching between deployment options is relatively straightforward, if organizational needs change.
